The Direct to Video Connoisseur

I'm a huge fan of action, horror, sci-fi, and comedy, especially of the Direct to Video variety. In this blog I review some of my favorites and not so favorites, and encourage people to comment and add to the discussion. For announcements and updates, don't forget to Follow us on Twitter and Like our Facebook page. If you're the director, producer, distributor, etc. of a low-budget feature length film and you'd like to send me a copy to review, you can contact me at dtvconnoisseur[at] I'd love to check out what you got. And check out my book, Chad in Accounting, over on Amazon.

DTVC Book Review

These are authors that have either submitted their books to me to review, have been on the podcast to discuss their work, or both. (I've also added my own book to the list.) If you've written something that you'd like to see listed here, let me know, and I'll be happy to post it.

Jacob Gustafson

Jacob's Awful Awesome Action is a fantastic read, either cover to cover, or kept as a reference guide to go back to whenever a new low-budget actioner crosses your path. It's a fun time, and a must for anyone who loves a good PM Entertainment or AIP style flick--or someone who's just getting into these kinds of films and needs a place to start! Click the link below to get it on paperback, or a full-color ebook version!

Mitch Lovell

Long-time friend of the DTVC, and proprietor of one of the best review sites out there, the Video Vacuum, in 2014 Mitch started writing books as well. The same great, unique take on film you enjoy on his site, you can now get in paperback or on your Kindle device. You can go to the link for his author page below to find all five books.

The Best (and Worst) of the Video Vacuum (2014)
The Video Vacuum's Unexpendable Guide to Action Movie Icons (2014)
Double Vision: Hollywood vs. Hollywood (2015)
Revenge of the Video Vacuum (2016)
The Bloody Book of Horror (2018)

Matt Poirier

That's right, I also have a book out. I've self-published my first novel, Chad in Accounting, on Amazon, and have others in various other draft statuses that I'm looking to get on there in the coming months/years. The link below is to my author page on Amazon. It will show my book in Kindle format, but if you click on it, you can choose paperback as well. Please let me know if you have any questions or want more information. Thanks!

Marco Siedelmann

When Marco asked me to review his book Stories from the Trenches on one of our favorite directors, Sam Firstenberg, nothing could have prepared me for the 700+ page compendium that came in the mail. Calling it thorough doesn't do it justice. As I paged through it, I wanted to go back and Lucas all of my old reviews to include the firsthand and behind the scenes information he gives us here.

The Untold, In-Depth, Outrageously True Story of Shapiro Glickenhaus Entertainment (2016)
Stories From The Trenches: Adventures in making High Octane Hollywood Movies with Cannon Veteran Sam Firstenberg (2020)
